A new documentary exploring the infamous 1977 plane crash that killed three members of Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd is coming to DVD.
Titled I’ll Never Forget You: The Last 72 Hours of Lynyrd Skynyrd and based on the book of the same name by security guard and crash survivor, Gene Odom, the film features “original behind-the-scenes film footage of life with the band before the crash, dramatic reenactments illustrating key dramatic scenes, and high-end CG animations—including a simulation of the plane crash that matches the NTSB report,” the official description of the film reads.
The plane, which contained a total of 26 passengers at the time of its flight from Greenville, South Carolina, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, crashed into a wooded area very close to its destination in Gillsburg, Mississippi on October 20, 1977.
The crash killed a total of six passengers, including the band’s founding member and lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant, guitarist and vocalist, Steve Gaines, backing vocalist Cassie Gaines, the band’s assistant road manager, Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray.
Odom, lead backup singer, Leslie Hawkins and guitar technician, Craig Reed survived the crash, and the new documentary will delve into their “firsthand accounts of the wild times of the band, the 72 hours leading to the crash, the harrowing crash itself and its aftermath.”
The band, which reunited after a 10-year-long hiatus in 1987, is currently on the last leg of its farewell tour dubbed “The Last of The Street Survivors Farewell Tour” that is set to come to a close in Wheatland, California, on October 19.
The documentary is slated for release on December 12, 2019, and is available for pre-order now through Amazon.
